“Overall, Byrum’s philosophy is that cognitive diversity in his team and ecosystem are very important, and that many data science groups lack such diversity. He also believes that deep learning—the current darling of many AI groups—is great for certain applications like image and audio analysis, but not for everything. He puts a strong emphasis on transparency and causality, which aren’t possible with deep learning models. As his team and ecosystem begin addressing traditional insurance problems with AI, he expects that even more diversity will be necessary.”
